Tuition fees 2nd programme
For a second bachelor’s or master’s programme, you do not pay the statutory tuition fee, but an institutional fee, which is often higher.

2nd bachelor's programme, tuition fees 2011-1012
If you want to enrol for bachelor’s programme for the 2011/2012 academic year, and you have already obtained a bachelor’s degree or a doctoraal or engineering science degree in the Netherlands since September 1991, then for the 2011/2012 academic year you will pay for an arts and humanities or a social sciences programme tuition fees of € 5280 and a for a science of medical programme € 9600.
Exceptions for bachelor’s programmes 2011/2012
Not applicable to students who on the basis of their nationality are required to pay a higher tuition fee.
- A reduced institutional fee applies for students enrolling in a bachelor’s programme for which a reduced institutional fee applied at Leiden University in the 2010/2011 academic year.
- The reduced institutional fee applies for students who are required to pay the institutional fee for a bachelor’s programme which they started while they were enrolled for a different bachelor’s programme which they have since completed.
- For students who have completed a bachelor’s programme at Leiden University in the 2010/2011 academic year, the reduced institutional fee applies for enrolment in a second bachelor’s programme.
- For students who have completed a bachelor’s programme and who enrol at Leiden University for a so-called pre-master’s/bridging programme comprising no more than 60 ECTS in preparation for an intended enrolment in a master’s programme at Leiden University, the reduced institutional fee applies for the pre-master’s programme. Different rates apply for any subsequent enrolment in a master’s programme (see relevant section).
- For students who enrol in the bachelor’s programme in Medicine or Biomedical Studies and who have not already completed a bachelor’s programme or doctoraal in health care, either the statutory tuition fee or a reduced institutional fee applies. The programmes which fall under the category health care can be found in the Central Register of Higher Education Programmes (Centraal Register Opleidingen Hoger Onderwijs (CROHO)).
The reduced institutional fee amounts to € 1713 for students who paid a statutory tuition fee of € 1672 in the academic year 2010/2011. The reduced institutional fee for students who paid the institutional fee of € 2300 amounts to € 2350 for the academic year 2011/2012.
2nd master's programme, tuition fees 2011-2012
If you want to enrol for a master’s programme in the 2011/2012 academic year and you have already obtained a master’s degree, a doctoraal or engineering science degree in the Netherlands since September 1991, then for the 2011/2012 academic year you will pay for an arts and humanities or a social sciences programme tuition fees of € 14,650, for a science or Biomedical Sciences programme € 18,100, and for Medicine € 19,700.
Exceptions for master’s programmes 2011/2012
Not applicable to students who on the basis of their nationality are required to pay a higher tuition fee or to students of the following programmes: Vitality and Ageing, International Relations & Diplomacy, European and Int. Business Law, International Tax Law, Public International Law, Air and Space Law.
- A reduced institutional fee applies for students enrolling in a master’s programme for which a reduced institutional fee applied at Leiden University in the 2010/2011 academic year.
- The reduced institutional fee applies for students who are required to pay the institutional fee for a master’s programme which they started while they were enrolled in a different, since completed, master’s programme.
- For students who have completed a first master’s programme at Leiden University in the 2010/2011 academic year and who enrol for a second master’s programme in the 2011/2012 academic year, the reduced institutional fee applies for the second master’s programme.
- Students who were enrolled in a bachelor’s before September 2010 will pay the reduced institutional fee for a second – closely related – master’s programme, provided they start this programme in the same academic year or the next academic year following that in which they obtained the relevant bachelor’s diploma.
- Students enrolling in an educational master’s programme will pay the statutory tuition fee or a reduced institutional fee for this master’s programme.
- The statutory tuition fee or the reduced institutional fee applies for students enrolling in a master’s programme in Medicine or Biomedical Sciences who have not previously obtained a master’s (medical doctor’s) degree, or a doctoraal in health care. The programmes which fall under the health care category can be found in the Central Register of Higher Education Programmes (Centraal Register Opleidingen Hoger Onderwijs (CROHO)).
The number of years during which students can enrol for a reduced fee for a second master’s programme is at most equivalent to the nominal length of study of the relevant second programme.
